Suppressing the Diseases of Animals and Man : Theobald Smith, Microbiologist (Boston Medical Library in the Countway Library of Medicine) Claude E. Dolman
Book Description Theobald Smith (1859-1934) is widely considered to be America's first significant medical scientist and the world's leading comparative pathologist. Entering the new field of infectious diseases as a young medical graduate, his research in bacteriology, immunology, and parasitology produced many important and basic discoveries. His most significant accomplishment was proving for the first time that an infectious disease could be transmitted by an arthropod agent. He also made significant discoveries on anaphylaxis, vaccine production, bacterial variation, and a host of other methods and diseases. His work on hog cholera led to the selection of the paratyphoid species causing enteric fever as the prototype of the eponymous Salmonella genus, mistakenly named for his chief at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Daniel Salmon, who first reported the discovery in 1886, although the work was undertaken by Smith alone. In 1895, Smith began a twenty-year career as......

Randy Newman : American Dreams Kevin Courrier
Book Description In addition to covering the life, music, and philosophy of Randy Newman, an enigmatic and audacious American composer, this biography looks at why he has been so largely unacknowledged—and misunderstood—by listeners and fans alike. Delving into the reasons for Newman's peripheral status on the cultural landscape, this suggests that, at heart, he has always been a musical outsider, that he has even built his mainstream career on a brilliant disguise. Using the conventions of American pop as a devious strategy, Newman incorporates into his barbed and satirical work the role of the untrustworthy narrator. In his songs, he wickedly enacts character dramas in order to play a variety of dubious roles: a slave trader in "Sail Away," a stalker in "Suzanne," a born-again yuppie in "It's Money That I Love," and an American demagogue in "Political Science." This is an illuminating portrait of an American artist as a masked man, an artful dodger who remains an......

Raven Of The Waves Michael Cadnum
Amazon.comSlash, chop, stab, kill with swords and axes--and yell for joy! In this rousing, historically authentic and appropriately gory novel about the Vikings, Michael Cadnum continues his exploration of cultures of violence (his other books include Redhanded , a contemporary novella about the brutal world of amateur boxing, and The Book of the Lion , set during the crusades). Cadnum, one of our finest young adult writers, vividly recreates not only the outer trappings of Viking society, but the psychological mindset of a people whose values, myths, songs, and sagas centered on murderous seafaring raids. Seventeen-year-old Lidsmod, however, is not so sure about this business of spectacular killing, although he does his best not to showit. He is on his first sea raid, aboard the new ship Raven , on the way with the other men of the village of Spjothof to plunder the English coast. Rumors have led them to a "gold fortress" or abbey, where 13-year-old Wiglaf is......

The Portrait Of Zelide Geoffrey Scott
Book Description1926. Madame de Charriere, or Zelide as she called herself, was born in 1740 in Zuilen, near Utrecht, under the name Isabella van Tuyll van Serooskerken. She was a writer and composer whose written work was influenced by Diderot and Rousseau. Her philosophically reflective and psychologically astute novels, which included Three Women and Caliste, or Letters Written from Lausanne, were not only critical of moral conventions but also anticipated mid-nineteenth-century ideas of emancipation. The author of this biography, Geoffrey Scott, was an architect and close friend of Edith Wharton. Scott's short-lived romance with Vita Sackville-West has been attributed to his literary aspirations. Within a two year period he had published the second edition of the Architecture of Humanism, a collection of poems, and The Portrait of Zelide, for which he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize....
