The Political Economy of American Trade Policy (A National Bureau of Economic Research Project Report)

Anne O. Krueger

The Political Economy of American Trade Policy (A National Bureau of Economic Research Project Report) Anne O. Krueger Exploring the political and economic determinants of trade protection, this study provides a wealth of information on key American industries and documents the process of seeking and conferring protection. Eight analytical histories of the automobile, steel, semiconductor, lumber, wheat, and textile and apparel industries demonstrate that trade barriers rarely have unequivocal benefits and may be counterproductive. They show that criteria for awarding protection do not take into account the interests of consumers or other industries and that political influence and an organized lobby are major sources of protection. Based on these findings, a final essay suggests that current policy fails to consider adequately economic efficiency, the public good, and indirect negative effects. This volume will interest scholars in economics, business, and public policy who deal with trade issues. книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Exploring the political and economic determinants of trade protection, this study provides a wealth of information on key American industries and documents the process of seeking and conferring protection. Spectacular Nature: Corporate Culture and the Sea World Experience

Susan G. Davis

Spectacular Nature: Corporate Culture and the Sea World Experience Susan G. Davis This is the story of Sea World, a theme park where the wonders of nature are performed, marketed, and sold. With its trademark star, Shamu the killer whaleas well as performing dolphins, pettable sting rays, and reproductions of pristine natural worldsthe park represents a careful coordination of shows, dioramas, rides, and concessions built around the theme of ocean life. Susan Davis analyzes the Sea World experience and the forces that produce it: the theme park industry; Southern California tourism; the privatization of urban space; and the increasing integration of advertising, entertainment, and education. The result is an engaging exploration of the role played by images of nature and animals in contemporary commercial culture, and a precise account of how Sea World and its parent corporation, Anheuser- Busch, succeed. Davis argues that Sea World builds its vision of nature around customers' worries and concerns about the environment, family relations, and ... книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин This is the story of Sea World, a theme park where the wonders of nature are performed, marketed, and sold. Talking With the Caller: Guidelines for Crisisline and Other Volunteer Counselors Jason Millman, Diane L. Strike This practical introduction to the art of interacting with crisis helpline callers will be essential to those who work, or intend to work, on a crisis line. The book is geared towards volunteers and others who initiate the crisis intervention process, when they need to accurately gauge the nature of the call and effectively engage the caller in problem-solving. The manual, in a loose-leaf binder, helps provide consistency in training on communication and listening skills. The text is designed to help telephone counselors provide an appropriate level of response and direction - but it is not written to help counselors detect underlying causes or otherwise engage in therapeutic encounters. Southern Discomfort: Women's Activism in Tampa, Florida, 1880S-1920s (Women in American History)

Nancy A. Hewitt

Southern Discomfort: Women's Activism in Tampa, Florida, 1880S-1920s (Women in American History) Nancy A. Hewitt Vitally linked to the Caribbean and southern Europe as well as to the Confederacy, the Cigar City of Tampa, Florida, never fit comfortably into the biracial mold of the New South. In Southern Discomfort, the esteemed historian Nancy A. Hewitt explores the interactions among distinct groups of women--native-born white, African American, and Cuban and Italian immigrant women--that shaped women's activism in this vibrant, multiethnic city. Around the turn of the twentieth century, several historical currents converged in Tampa. The city was subject to the state's newly imposed forms of legal segregation from 1885 on, and it served as a center for exiles organizing on behalf of the Cuban War of Independence and as the disembarkation point for U.S. troopsheading to Cuba in 1898. The city was the entrept for thousands of Cuban and Italian immigrants seeking work in the booming cigar trade, and it attracted dozens of itinerant radicals eager to address locally based revolutionary clubs,... книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Vitally linked to the Caribbean and southern Europe as well as to the Confederacy, the Cigar City of Tampa, Florida, never fit comfortably into the biracial mold of the New South.
