Villas of Tuscany

Carlo Cresti

Villas of Tuscany Carlo Cresti Book DescriptionEurope north of the Alps knew virtually nothing of fine living until Charles VIII of France and his army invaded Italy in the late 15th century. There, in the palaces and villas of Tuscany, the French discovered luxury on a scale beyond anything imagined in the medieval stone castles of the Loire Valley. Even today these villas remain among the wonders of the civilized world, with their architecture conceived by such renowned masters as Sangallo, Buontalenti, and Peruzzi, their interiors radiant with trompe-l'oeil frescoes attributed to the likes of Pontormo, Allori, and Il Volterrano, and their lush garden settings replete with fountains, grottoes, statuary, and breathtaking vistas. Lavishly illustrated with more than 300 color photographs, Villas of Tuscany brings together 40 superb examples ranging in date from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century. Each is captured with all its aristocratic trappings: towers, peach-color stucco walls, and red-tiled... книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Book DescriptionEurope north of the Alps knew virtually nothing of fine living until Charles VIII of France and his army invaded Italy in the late 15th century. Mallarme on Fashion : A Translation of the Fashion Magazine La Derniere Mode, with Commentary

P. N. Furbank

Mallarme on Fashion : A Translation of the Fashion Magazine La Derniere Mode, with Commentary P. N. Furbank Book Description In 1874, Stephane Mallarme, the great French poet, undertook a highly idiosyncratic project--the publication of a fashion magazine called La Derniere Mode (The Latest Fashion)--that he almost single-handedly compiled. Using a variety of feminine and masculine pseudonyms to theorize about fashion and to advise on popular vacation destinations, home furnishings, and entertainment, Mallarme created a spectacularly original work. The distinguishing feature of Mallarme's magazine is that it explores the nature of fashion from the inside. While it is a genuine fashion magazine, it also satirizes the entire genre. Various theories have been entertained about the work: it has been viewed as a prose poem, a hoax, and a cynical money-making venture. Furbank and Cain, however, argue that such guesses are hopelessly off the mark. Complete with the original artwork and a contextualizing introduction and commentary, this is the definitive... книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Book Description In 1874, Stephane Mallarme, the great French poet, undertook a highly idiosyncratic project--the publication of a fashion magazine called La Derniere Mode (The Latest Fashion)--that he almost single-handedly compiled. Alabaster Images of Medieval England (Museum of London Medieval Finds 1150 -- 1450)

Francis Cheetham

Alabaster Images of Medieval England (Museum of London Medieval Finds 1150 -- 1450) Francis Cheetham Book DescriptionFrom the late 1300s to the Reformation, alabaster carving was a major activity in the English Midlands, in an area centred on Nottingham. Altarpieces and panels were produced for the home market, but also for export; the sculptures have adistinctive style, dictated by the religious subjects and by the material, and were usually painted and gilded. At the Reformation, such items were hidden or destroyed, and it is the survival of numerous continental examples, particularly in France, together with the remaining examples from England, that enables the history of alabaster carving to be documented. This book catalogues some 2,400 carvings, with their location and published references, coupled with a Geographical Index. It is the fullest catalogue yet compiled on these exquisite small-scale sculptures, incorporating much new information, particularly relating to the iconography of the carvings. FRANCIS CHEETHAM is also the author of English Medieval Alabasters, containing... книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Book DescriptionFrom the late 1300s to the Reformation, alabaster carving was a major activity in the English Midlands, in an area centred on Nottingham. The Magnetic Era: Video Art in the Netherlands 1970-1985

Ruth Bellinkx

The Magnetic Era: Video Art in the Netherlands 1970-1985 Ruth Bellinkx Book DescriptionVideo has commanded a place within the domain of the visual arts since 1965 and has now grown into one of the most widely used forms of art. After the successful introduction of the medium in the United States, Europe followed suit with the Netherlands playing a pioneering role. The video-art circuit in the Netherlands evolved thanks to a unique cross-fertilization of local and international tendencies, and to the provision of workshop facilities by institutions like Het Lijnbaanscentrum,Jan van Eijck Akademie, Monte Video and De Appel. From the early 1970s to the mid-80s, the new medium rapidly achieved maturity, with artists discovering its creative possibilities and documentary expressiveness--but continuously needing to defend its validity. The gradual integration of simpler and cheaper montage techniques in the production process marked a turning point for video art, clearing the way for its assimilation into the art world in the 90s. Recognizing that there are... книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Book DescriptionVideo has commanded a place within the domain of the visual arts since 1965 and has now grown into one of the most widely used forms of art.
