Staging Nation: English Language Theatre In Malaysia And Singapore Jacqueline Lo
Book DescriptionStaging Nation examines the complex relationship between the theatrical stage and the wider stage of nation building in postcolonial Malaysia and Singapore. In less than fifty years, locally written and produced English language theatre has managed to shrug off its colonial shackles to become an important site of community expression. This groundbreaking comparative study examines the role of creative writing and the act of performance as actual political acts and as interventions in national self-constructions. It argues that certain forms of theatre can be read as emerging oppositional cultures which contribute towards the deepening of democracy by offering contending narratives of the nation. The combination of a rigorous theoretical framework and detailed analysis of theatrical texts grounded in sociological analysis of Malaysian and Singaporean societies, together with documentation of specific case studies, makes this book a pioneering contribution to Asian......

Madonna's Drowned Worlds: New Approaches to Her Cultural Transformations (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series) Santiago Fouz-Hernandez, Freya Jarman-Ivens
Ashgate. Twenty years after the release of her first album, Madonna remains one of the most consistently transgressive and self-transforming artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The release of three albums and two sold-out world tours since 2000 alone have renewed media and academic interest in the artist. Madonna's recent work presents a set of strikingly new challenges to cultural analysis, and new developments in gender, queer and ethnic studies have shed more light on her entire ?uvre. While the contributors refer to classic cultural theorists such as Baudrillard, ?i?ek, Foucault and Barthes, new theoretical trends feature prominently. The present volume offers new perspectives on Madonna's work to date, addressingher configurations of race, gender and sex(uality), with special emphasis on her resurrection after the Sex backlash in the early 1990s. The collection focuses on new Madonna-related topics such as Hinduism, Judaism, Japanese culture, all-American......

Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects Kurt St. Thomas, Troy Smith
St. Martin's Griffin. Kurt St. Thomas, a die-hard fan, interviewed Nirvana for the first time in 1991, just as they were catapulted from alternative-rock obscurity to massive stardom. He found a group of musicians devoted to avoiding popular rock-star conventions and creating the kind of music they wanted to hear. But when he last spoke with them just two years later, the band seemed worn down- conflicted about their success, and about having an audience that was the epitome of everything they attempted to rebel against. And their lead singer's heroin addiction was painfully evident. In Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects, St. Thomas uses a wealth of sources to reconstruct Nirvana's rise and fall, including: -The musical influences that formed Nirvana's sound -Fascinating stories about the creation of their three albums, and of the ideas that shaped their songs -A complete discography, and an A-Z list of every Nirvana song officially released. The result is a unique look at the now legendary band, written with the......
