Organizations as Learning Systems: "Living Composition" as an Enabling Infrastructure (Advanced Series in Management)

Marjatta Maula

Organizations as Learning Systems: The main contribution of this book is the living composition, the model of living organizations. The components and their relationships are defined so that they enable and facilitate interconnected openness and closure, i.e. the 'sensing' (interactive openness) and 'memory' (self-referentiality) of an organization. These characteristics and related knowledge flows enable the capability to learn and co-evolve with the broader business ecosystem. Alan R. Earls, Robert E. Edwards

Raytheon Company: The First Sixty Years (Images of America: Massachusetts) (Images of America) Alan R. Earls, Robert E. Edwards Raytheon's history is one of the great American success stories. Launched in 1922, the Cambridge-based company quickly moved to the forefront of innovation in the electronics industry. During World War II, thousands of Raytheon workers contributedto the war effort, supplying eighty percent of the magnetron tubes (vital components for U.S. and British radars), developing miniature tubes for the crucial proximity fuse in antiaircraft shells, and providing entire radar systems. Although government cotracts slowed after World War II, Raytheon continued to develop military components, including leading-edge radars and missiles for America's defenses in the Cold War, but it also began to offer a host of civilian products: the famous RadaRange (the worlds first microwave oven), televisions, marine radars, transistors, miniature hearing aids, and medical equipment. книги, книжный магазин, интернет-магазин Raytheon's history is one of the great American success stories. The $800 Million Pill: The Truth behind the Cost of New Drugs

Merrill Goozner

The $800 Million Pill: The Truth behind the Cost of New Drugs Merrill Goozner Why do life-saving prescription drugs cost so much? Drug companies insist that prices reflect the millions they invest in research and development. In this gripping exposA©, Merrill Goozner contends that American taxpayers are in fact footing the bill twice: once by supporting government-funded research and again by paying astronomically high prices for prescription drugs. Goozner demonstrates that almost all the important new drugs of the past quarter-century actually originated from research at taxpayer-funded universities and at the National Institutes of Health. He reports that once the innovative work is over, the pharmaceutical industry often steps in to reap the profit. Goozner shows how drug innovation is driven by dedicated scientists intent on finding cures for diseases, not by pharmaceutical firms whose bottom line often takes precedence over the advance of medicine.
